ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB. NOTES ON SATURDAY'S RACE. (By “Three Speed.”) The race on Saturday, which was over a distance of 30 miles, was held in damp conditions and was a little fast for some of the riders. On the whole it was a good race from start to finish, I hope to see the riders obtain some hard training for the coming race on July 9. B. Dooling, off the 9min mark, rode a hard, fast race to gain his first victory, which he well deserved. C. Gourlay, also off 9min, gave a good display of riding to gain second place. K. Woollet, off scratch, set a hot pace right from the start to finish third. He believes in hard training. J. Duckett and C. Dykes rode well together to gain second and third fastest time. The fastest time honours again went to K. Woollet. E. Lefort found the going hard, after losing his co-marker, and then he had machine trouble not far from the turn. R. Killington, a new rider, rode in his second race and is getting down to it. Training is essential to success. W. Gay did not compete, having a severe cold. His clubmates hope he will soon be a starter again. O. Morris was absent on Saturday. He has to come from Carterton. He is a keen rider. ■J. Brader, who is a determined rider, had a puncture early in the race, otherwise he would probably have been in at the finish. B. Harman, who crashed last Saturday, has not recovered from his injuries. G. Swain, who fell at the turn, rode well but the pace was apparently too hot for him. M. Graham went well for a time, but lack of training told on hirri towards the finish. L. Green rode very well on Saturday. R. Copp, who generally finishes well up, pulled out on Saturday. Training is the thing to provide fitness. J. McAliece did not compete owing to a severe cold, but will be out again on Saturday. Members of the club are urged to train systematically in view of the big race.
