MERCHANT IN COURT

FOLLOWING ON ARREST ON MARIPOSA ALLEGED THEFT IN SYDNEY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 28. Karl Jacob Regner,. described as a merchant, aged 26. appeared before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., at the Magistrates' Court this morning charged with the theft at Sydney between May 31 and June 27 of £l6 15s 9d, the property of Thomas William Dockerty, trading as Kornoff and Company. The police in applying for a remand until July 5. said that Regner was arrested on a provisional warrant issued by the New South Wales police. If bail was sought the police asked that it should be substantial. Appearing for Regner, Mr Trevor Henry said that the amount mentioned in the charge was small. Regner informed him that there was some civil action in Sydney respecting the matter and that he was cleared so far as liability was concerned. He came to Auckland under his own name and for five days was at a hotel in the city. He had £ 170 and there had been no attempt to defeat his creditors. When questioned by the police he immediately admitted his identity. The magistrate granted a remand and fixed bail at £l5O, or two sureties of £75 each, and ordered Regner to report to the police daily. Regner was arrested on the Mariposa.
