OBITUARY
MR PHILLIP RUSSELL. An old and respected resident of South Canterbury for many years, Mr Philip Russell, died at his home in Walton’s Avenue, Masterton, on Saturday, at the age of 83 years. The late Mr Russell, who was a native of Corscombe, Dorset. England, came to New Zealand by one of the first steam ships to make the voyage, the Otrato, arriving at Lyttelton in 1874. He proceeded to Timaru by the Coastal boat, the Beautiful Star. Mr Russell followed farming and bush work for a period and then entered the grocery business, in which he remained for forty years. Upon his retirement he took up his residence in Masterton, where he had lived for the past twelve years. Mr Russell is survived by a widow, one daughter, Miss L. Russell, of Wellington, and five sons, Messrs G. P. Russell (Nelson), William and T. A. Russell (Masterton), J. Russell. (Auckland) and L. I. Russell (Wellington). The interment, which was private, took place in Masterton this phernoon.
