COURTCRAFT NOW A HACK
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Few horses at Ellerslie are doing better than Professional, who has made marked -improvement during the short time he has been at headquarters. In his only start at the Great Northern meeting this gelding gave indications of making an early return to the winning list by finishing third to Full of Scotch and Innes Lad in the Orakei Hurdle Race on the final day. As Professional had had little previous experience as a jumper his form was encouraging, and more is likely to be heard of him in this department.
T. G. Bullock brought home a new recruit for his stable from Dunedin after the trip to Wingatui. The newcomer is San Marino, a three-year-old filly by Gustavo from Ravenna. She wasp reduced once as a two-year-old last season, and was then put aside. Her breeding makes her rather an object of interest, as both Gustavo and Ravenna were by Solferino. On her blood lines further back, on both sides, she has everything to recommend her. Ravenna, who was a great race mare herself, has already left two good ones in Ventrac and Travenna.
The brilliant three-year-old Courtcraft, who developed a leg prior to the Wellington meeting in March, and was subsequently blistered, is now being hacked out on his owner’s property at Oringi, preparatory to commencing another preparation.
In alluding to* the purchase of Myosotis the Sydney Morning Herald said that not one of Pharlaris’s sons already in Australia have been a failure. Pharalis got Sickle, a great sire in America, and also Pharos, Fairway, Manna and Colorado. Phalaris was got by Polymelus, who also sired Paladin, who has helped to keep up the family reputation in New Zealand.
The ex-New Zealander George Price has won 14 races this season with two-year-olds in his stable. His latest winner Petruchio, who recorded his third successive win. He won with 9.9 over seven furlongs at Randwick in Imin 24? sec in a field of 18. Petruchio was got by the Phalaris horse Bullhead from Love Box, by Redfern —Honey Guide, by Mountain King.
The two-year-old colt Ever True, the first of the progeny bred in Ireland by Mr Standfast, is a good colt, as advice has just been received by Mr Martin Tims that he carried 9.4 and won the Novice Stakes at The Curragh on May 26, beating a field of. 11 two-year-olds. This was Ever True’s second start. Chanak, 8.13, and What Next 8.4, had both won twice in succession and Chanak was an odds-on favourite.
The French-bred horse Genetout, who was got by Vatout (the sire of Bois Roussel, this year’s Derby winne) is back in work at Randwick.
Proclamation, a winner at Hastings, was got by Munting Song from Sabellion, by Threadneedle —Sabine, by Gazeley—La Sabine, by Sabretache — Aherlow, by Clanranald.
On the old theory about smoke and fire, the two-year-old filly Ate, who was well backed at Hastings, no doubt gave reason for the support. She was got by Lord Quex from Squeeze, a sister to Cuddle.
DANNEVIRKE RACES INTERLOCUTOR WINS STEEPLES. AN AMUSING RACE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, June 25. The Dannevirke Hunt Club’s annual race meeting held on the Dannevirke course on Saturday was the most successful the club has enjoyed for several years. There was an excellent attendance, >and the investments of £5560 represented an increase of £1334 on last year’s figures. The Dannevirke Hunt Club Cup provided much amusement There were only five starters and the field was reduced to four soon after crossing the fence, where Royal Toast made a bad jump and his rider broke a leather.
