FIRST TEST

HOBBS APPROVES TACTICS OF AUSTRALIANS. DID THE ONLY THING POSSIBLE. LONDON. June 22. While Hammond can continue winning the toss, Hobbs does not think England will lose a Test, but if Bradman wins, Hobbs believes England will have difficulty in avoiding defeat. Hobbs, in an article in the “Star,” adds: “I doubt whether we gave the Australians enough credit for saving the first Test. If our batsmen had gone in and played with their backs to the wall, a majority of the writers would have lauded their great effort. All the cricketers to whom I have spoken agree that the Australians did the only thing possible. I subscribe to that view.”
