WIMBLEDON TENNIS

MAKO BEATS MALFROY. MRS HOPMAN TESTS OUT MRS WILLS-MOODY. (Recd This Day, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, June 22. The Wimbledon lawn tennis tournament was continued today. Mako was slow to get going and his relative mildness of service enabled Malfroy to run to 5/2, then 5/4. The New Zealander did much running to capture the set. Mako, in the second set, served more fiercely, forcing Malfroy to resort to lobbing, to which Mako was merciless. Malfroy’s best defence was in drop shots, but the American's legginess and reach often neutralised this. Both played below form. Malfroy, in the fourth set. found that it paid to come to the net and volley but there were long rallies in a glaring sun. In the fifth set Mako lasted better. A full gallery at the centre court saw Mrs Hopman test out the strength of Mrs Wills-Moody, which it was generally assumed was waning. The Australian kept the rallies going gamely and easily matched the American’s driving, but just lacked that purposefulness and finish which Mrs WillsMoody produced when in difficulties. Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.) fainted when walking on to the court to play Miss J. Ingram (Britain) and the match was postponed. Results were as follow: — MEN’S SINGLES. Second Round. J. D.
