BRITAIN & ITALY
AGREEMENT AND SPANISH SITUATION MR CHAMBERLAIN QUESTIONED. VAGUE & INDEFINITE REPLY. (British Official Wireless). (Recd This Day, 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, June 22. Mr Arthur Henderson asked Mr Chamberlain in the House of Commons what representations had been received from Italy that the coming into effect of the Rome Agreement should be expedited. Mr Chamberlain replied: “In the course of an exchange of views which from time to time has taken place between the two Governments. Italy made plain its desire, in which Britain fully participates, that the agreement should be brought into force at the earliest possible moment consistent with the fulfilment of pre-requisite conditions.” Mr Henderson asked: “In view of the fact that Italy has suspended negotiations with France, will Mr Chamberlain give an assurance that Italy will not be permitted to drive a wedge between this country and France?” Mr Chamberlain: “I have no reason, to suppose that Italy wishes to drive a wedge between us and the French.”
