MURDEROUS ATTACKS
STEAMERS BOMBED AND SUNK AT VALENCIA. DECKS MACHINE-GUNNED. (Recd This Day, 10.30 a.m.) VALENCIA, June 22. The British steamer Thorpe Ness and the Greek steamer Sunion were bombed and sunk by rebel planes in an early morning raid. The Thorpe Ness was previously bombed on January 20, at Tarragonna, when seven members of her crew were killed. Captain Ormode, skipper of the Thorpe Ness, in an interview, said: “I was standing on the bridge when a plane swooped and a bomb hit us amidships, shattering the port side boat and ripping out the steamer’s side. Twenty-five members of the crew scrambled into the other boat and I, with the remainder of the crew, leapt into the water with lifebelts and swam for three hours, when the Sunion picked us up and set us ashore. I had scarcely, landed when the Sunion was struck. It is an outrage that after the bombing the plane circled the Thorpe Ness and machine-gunned her decks. The Thorpe Ness was anchored miles from the wharves, preparatory to unloading a cargo of grain. A Chinese member of the crew is missing.” RAID ON BARCELONA. SLAUGHTER IN WORKING CLASS DISTRICTS. (Recd This Day, 9.35 a.m.) VALENCIA, June 22. Over one hundred bombs were dropped on Barcelona early this morning, causing heavy casualties in the working class districts.
