Cost of Municipal Election.
It costs a lot of money to elect _ a city council. A few of the major items of expenditure at the election last month were given to the Auckland City Council by the returning officer, Mr P. F. Notley, as follows:— Printing of rolls, £1949; wages on election day, £1222; wages for official count, £620; printing enrolment forms and cards, £52; printing ballot papers, £l6l. These items alone total just over £4OOO, and accounts for advertising, cartage, hire of halls, and other matters have yet to be rendered. The cost of compiling and printing the roll, it was pointed out, was shared among four local bodies, while the Auckland Harbour Board would also pay a proportion of the election expenses. Houses for Pensioners.
It is possible that at its next meeting the Christchurch City Council will be asked to buy a site on which a housing settlement for old age pensioners may be established. This was indicated recently by the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane). At its last meeting the council set up a sub-committee to investigate sites and plans for a housing scheme for old-age pensioners and others in poor circumstances, the Mayor being a member of this sub-com-mittee. Commenting on the progress of the sub-committee’s work, Mi- Macfarlane said that there was a very good chance that it would be able to make a recommendation to the next meeting of the council about the purchase of a site. He added that arrangements were being made for two councillors to interview the Minister for Finance (the Hon W. Nash) soon and discuss the financing of the proposed scheme.
