PERFORMANCE OF INNES LAD

(By “The Cynic.”)

The performance of Inness Lad in winning both the Hurdle and Steeplechase events at the Bay of Plenty meeting was an outstanding achievement and the condition in which this fine jumper was produced was a credit to the young Te Rapa trainer, R. Cotter. Not only did Inness Lad win, but he scored in effortless style on either occasion, his hurdles win being achieved just as easily as earlier in.the day over country. As was only to be expected Inness Lad has incurred a 101 b penalty for his W. G. Park Steeplechase engagement at Te Rapa on Saturday—yet in his present state of fitness he appeals as one of the hardest to dispose of.

Although Polydora has been nominated for the Dromor.e Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton her chances of getting to the post are only moderate. She has been very sore on and off for some time past.

Sunny Comet did not stay on well in the heavy ground at Wingatui, but he may be better suited at Ashburton where the going is not likely to be so holding. Sunny Comet is due to make his first appearance over country at Oamaru the following Saturday.

The Woodville trainer F. Davis has under his charge several well-bred rising two-year-olds. They include: La Bru, a filly by Beau Pere from Mandane; Kobi, a colt by Bulandshar from Lucinette; Ivory, a filly by'Ringmaster from Inlaid; a colt by Beau Pere from Silver Rule, and a colt by Constant Son from Lute String.

■ Superex has experienced a fairly busy season but not a great deal of success. He has started 26 times for three wins and nine places. The Night Raid gelding has failed to gain a place in his last seven races.

All going well in the meantime, G. Fielding may take both Last Link and Our Pal to Trentham next month. Both horses ran fair races at Wingatui this month, and showed they are quite at home in soft going, such as is generally found at Trentham at the Winter Meeting.

Papernilla, who is trained at Hornby by J. Bryce, raced on the first day of the Riccarton Easter meeting and his showing was such that he looked a possibility for the second day. He was not produced nor has he been since, but he will be seen out at Ashburton.' The Paper Money gelding is small, but he possesses a good turn of speed and can run out a solid six.

In view of his form at Dunedin it is difficult to see anything engaged in the mile and a quarter hack race at Ashburton which is likely to be preferred by the public, to Settlement, but Palmyra and Wagner will have solid support also, and it will not be surprising if both finish in front of the anticipated favourite.

Haughty Winner is carrying much more condition than formerly and is looking bright and well, but as he has not had a strenuous time since he raced at Easter he will need the race which he is to have at Ashburton on Saturday to clean him up for the Trentham meeting.

The three-year-old Hauwiri, filly Ngawiri disclosed a fine turn of speed when she opened her winning account in the second division of the Novice Handicap at Tauranga on Saturday running up to the leaders at the turn and drawing right away from them in the straight. This promising member of A. C. Jones’ establishement showed up in her initial engagement' at the Matamata gathering in April and on that occasion she may have carried the day but for running wide at the home turn. Saturday’s outing was only her second essay in company and a line through her Tauranga effort would indicate that more will be heard of her in the months ahead. She is an acceptor for the first division of the Arapuni Handicap at the Waipa meeting on Saturday and should make a bold showing.

Senacre made a gallant attempt to win the hack seven at Tauranga, but she just failed to see it out. However, she may make amends soon as Saturday’s outing should serve to effect improvement in her general condition.

Among the likely improvers noted at the Bay of Plenty meeting was the Speardance three-year-old Spearford, who was finishing on over the deciding stages of the Novice Handicap. He is an acceptor for the Arapuni Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday and he will have to be conceded a good chance.

King Silver, who was having his first run for a spell at Tauranga on Saturday, was responsible for a meritorious showing and one on which he should soon improve. A fine upstand-

ing gelding by King Nassau he should thrive on racing and will bear watching the next time he is produced.

John Charles made a good .start by winning over fences at Hawke's Bay, but unfortunately his career as a 'chaser may not be a lengthy one. He pulled up lame, but it may be only a passing trouble.

The Magnus filly Great Memory cost her present owner 150gns, and is proving a bargain at the price. Great Memory has won three times on the West Coast in addition to gathering place money.

Contract was making his first appearance over jumps when he won the Brush Hurdles at the Greymouth meeting. Contract was got by Tea Tray from Gardenia, by Boniform.

The Hawke’s Bay Hurdles winner Spender is a six-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Gold Painting, by Boniform—Ormulu, by Orme. Spender has displayed winning form on the flat, and with growing experience may win again over hurdles.

Mast.er Dingle has shown good progress since his arrival at Riccarton. In his first race as a two-year-old, the Shambles gelding promised good things to come, by his fine finishing effort into second place. Since then, however, he has failed to improve on his early form. Now that Master Dingle is keeping sounder, it may not be long before he runs up to his former promise.

Mob Rule is among the regular workers at Riccarton and she should soon be ready to face the starter again. She has not raced since the Wairarapa meeting in January, where on the first day she won her first race.

Master Musk is in work again at Matamata after having recovered from a strained hock. He was going well when he met with the accident, and should again be prominent in the late spring.

In winning two races at Hastings first up following a spell since midsummer, First Chapter showed what was probably his best form yet, though at times during his hack career he looked like doing better than he has done. He also won at Waipukurau at Christmas first up after a lengthy rest.

Hegemonic, winner of the City Handicap at the opening meeting of the A.R.C. birthday fixture at Victoria Park, Adelaide, on Saturday, June 4, has proved a bargain, as she was purchased for her owner, Mrs Walter Rugless, of Glenelg, for 55 guineas by P. Quinlan at the Sydney yearling sales. This was her third successive win and her success, one of her wins being in the Goodwood Handicap.

The rising two-year-old colt by Dark Fox from Our Legion, purchased by Mr A. D. Potter at the Sydney sales, has had the name Dark Legion claimed for him. The colt, who has made his appearance on the track at Ellerslie, shows plenty of' size and quality. He is a three-quarter brother to Dark Chief, a good performer in Melbourne. Proclamation, maiden winner at Hastings on Saturday, is a three-year-old gelding by Hunting Song out of Aiguille’s full-sister Sabellian. Ate, who was well backed first time out in the maiden race at Hastings on Saturday, is a two-year-old filly by Lord Quex out of Cuddle’s full-sister Squeeze. The brilliant three-year-old Courtcraft, who developed a leg prior - to the Wellington meeting in March and was subsequently blistered, is now being hacked about on his owner’s property at Oringi, preparatory to commencing another preparation.
