BURGLARS AT WORK
SERIES OF MANAWATU CRIMES. OVER A WIDESPREAD AREA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 22. Premises at Palmerston North. Bunnythorpe and Feilding were burgled last night, probably by a gang. As their operations were fairly widespread they probably had a car. The Glaxo factory at Bunnythorpe was broken into between closing time last night and early this morning. It is understood nothing was stolen. Though the door of the office was prised open and papers and office equipment scattered about the floor, the safe was not touched. In the yard outside, however, a petrol pump was broken open and a quantity of spirit taken. The thieves received the small reward of about a shilling when they broke into Woodham’s service station, Palmerston North. The office was broken open and drawers and fixtures searched and the only money available taken. They also visited a garage next door, but nothing was touched. A service station owned by Mr L. J. Jackson at the corner of Warwick Street and Kimbolton Road, Feilding. was also entered, and a cash register containing about £4O in cash and cheques was removed. It was recovered this morning in Reid's Line. The till had been prised open and the cash taken, but the cheques were untouched. Premises occupied by Mr H. J. Dewe, wool dealer, in Fergusson Street, Feilding, were also entered during the night. The till was forced in and £2 in money stolen, but an attempt to open the safe was not successful. The premises of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., were also entered, a jemmy being used to force the doors, but no information is available as to what success attended the burglars’ efforts.
