MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. PROPOSED LADIES’ REST ROOM. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last night. Others present were Councillors Trevor Beetham, J. Ninnes, G. W. Morice,' A. T. Jackson, H. E. Gardner, R. Russell, G. D. Wilson, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low and W. White. Consideration of an application by the Wairarapa and Ruahing Aero Club for financial assistance was deferred until the estimates meeting. The New Zealand Esperanto Association wrote applying for the free use of a room in the Municipal Buildings for meetings. It was decided to offer the Association a room at a rental of 2s 6d a night. “This is a very kind offer," observed the Mayor when referring to an offer by the Trust Lands Trust to make the Opera House available free of charge for civic receptions and similar gatherings. “I have always held.” Mr Jordan added, "that the Municipal Hall is the right place for civic receptions, but unfortunately we have unnatural disadvantages there.” It was decided to accept the offer with thanks. On the recommendation of the Library Committee it was decided that for the 1938-39 rating year the library rate be increased from ,16d in the £ to .',d in the £, based on the unimproved value of all rateable property in the Borough. An application by the Wairarapa Coursing Club for permission to hang a streamer across Queen Street from June 22 to June 25 was granted provided it was hung to the satisfaction of the Borough Engineer. It was resolved to make a grant of £2 2s to the Royal Humane Society. It was decided to offer the Wairarapa Hospital Board a yearly rental of £7B, plus rates, taxes and insurance for the use of the board's building in Dixon Street for a Ladies’ Rest Room.
