LIVING IN OLD SHEDS

MAORI AND CHINESE FAMILIES. A MANGERE PROBLEM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. The problem of Maori and Chinese families living at Mangere in old buildings, often without permission of the property. owners, was the subject of a report to the Manukau County Council today by the county inspector. He stated that Natives in particular were occupying old and insanitary sheds as dwellings. The trouble had been aggravated by an influx of Maoris from distant places, taking advantage of employment on relief works in the

Hillsborough and Onehunga districts. Notices foi' cleaning and repairing the buildings occupied by the Chinese had been insisted on. In all instances cleaning had been done, but in many cases the repairs were not done. The council, in committee last Friday, decided to serve closing orders. Some of the places were old storage sheds and one was a cowshed. The council decided today to send a copy of the inspector’s report to the Minister of Native Affairs and another to the Akarana Maori Association.
