POOLING SYSTEMS
CARTAGE OF BOBBY CALVES A WARNING TO CARRIERS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. An expression of satisfaction at the introduction of pooling systems for the cartage of bobby calves, and a warning to carriers not to offer opposition to the pools, together with an outline of the policy to be followed regarding bobby calf transport, was given today by Mr E. J. Phelan, the licensing authorities of No. 1 transport district. “The introduction of these pools in so many quarters reflects very creditably on the intelligence of the farmers responsible,” said Mr Phelan. “Several methods of marketing have been observed, but this aspect does not come within my province. In some quarters a tendency has been observed for two interests —carriers and farmers —to engage in a little jockeying for position. Some carriers have tried to make capital out of the situation, while cases have come to my notice where the pool committees have been hawking prices, thus setting the carriers against one another, and have obtained rates that are not economically sound. lam convinced that the fairest formula is to allow a carrier 5s 6d an hour, plus sixpence a mile for each four-wheeled truck, and 6s an hour, plus 7d a mile, for each six-wheeled vehicle.” Mr Phelan issued a warning note to carriers. Some operators had acted in a way that suggested they would like to see the pools fail. “It is quite clear, however, that the pooling movement will not fail, but will spread latei- to other classes of freight. Already in some areas the system has been extended to lambs and arrangements are being made in one district to extend it to pigs. It is being fostered by the farmers and is not dependent on Governmental assistance for success. Any carrier who finds himself deprived of much of his work as the result of early antagonism to the pool will have only himself to blame.”
