BOWLERS ON TOP COLLAPSE OF AUSTRALIANS. LANCASHIRE’S SURPRISING RECOVERY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.15 a.m.) LONDON, June 20. The weather was cool and dull when the match between Australia and Lancashire was resumed at Manchester. Phillipson, bowling with fine pace, got Barnett in the third over. Waite was shaky against- both Phillipson and Nutter. A VICIOUS OFF-BREAK. Hassett was half an hour today without scoring. He was finally clean bowled by a vicious off-break, without adding to his score. His innings lasted four hours and included 13 4’s. Waite, was out in Wilkinson’s first over, the ball turning slightly from the leg. WHITE HANGS ON. White hung on with remarkable solidity against excellent bowling. Fleetwood-Smith was unable to bat owing to having undergone a dental operation over the weekend. McCormick never looked capable of staying. McCormick and Waite opened the attack against Lancashire. Waite yorked Washbrook in his first over, and a little later got Paynter leg before. Lancashire then had two wickets down for 19 runs. A GOOD PARTNERSHIP. Iddon and Oldfield then made a stand which realised 107 runs. Oldfield, the most stylish batsman in Lancashire, pulled and cut delightfully, while Iddon played with unhurried comfort. The total of 100 was raised in 95 minutes, the second fifty having taken only 30 minutes. Chipperfield was called to the crease for the first time for a month to vary the attack which seemed in danger of being collared. McCORMICK CLAPS ON SPEED. McCormick, who earlier bowled with imposing speed; was recalled at 126, and got Iddon with his first ball, and Oldfield two overs later. Both spooned the ball to silly mid-on. Oldfield batted 105 minutes and hit ten 4’s. McCormick took a brilliant lefthand catch off his own bowling to dismiss Nutter. A COURAGEOUS STAND. Lancashire, with 7 wickets down for 169 runs, again were in a poor position, but Phillipson and Farrimond added 71 runs for the eighth wicket in a courageous stand. The county were out after 275 minutes’ play, having made a surprising recovery. The scores when stumps were drawn for the day were as follow:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
