FORKS

IN USE NEARLY 400 YEARS. Although forks play an unimportant part in history, they play a most important part in our everyday life. For nearly 400 years this dining essential has been in use, though, today, perhaps, it is more advanced than its early predecessors. Introduced in a poor but useful form during the time of Henry VII, the fork has improved with age. The advent of the fork was hailed with delight by all early housewives. Prior to this, finger-bowls were in general use. Imagine, if you can, a family of long years ago seated at the dinner table calmly partaking of venison and other foodstuffs, guiding same to their mouths with their fingers. The women of “Good Queen Bess’s” time were also to be seen tearing at cutlets held in a vise-like grip in the hand. However, the forerunner of our pre-sent-day table fork had its origin in Italy, and was introduced into England during the reign of King James I. — “Much to the saving of ‘napkins.’ ”
