BADMINTON

WAIRARAPA v. AUSTRALIA MATCHES ON WEDNESDAY The visiting Australian Badminton team will open its New Zealand tour at Masterton next Wednesday when it will meet the Wairarapa representatives. Widespread interest is being taken in the matches, which should provide badminton of the highest order. Wairarapa, headed by Hawksworth, the New Zealand champion, is a strong combination, and may be relied upon to give a good account of itself against the accomplished visitors. The Australians will be officially welcomed at 8.30 p.m. by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, in the Regent Theatre, where the matches will take place. For the convenience of patrons a loud speaker system will be installed so that the voice of the umpire and the sound of the shuttles may be heard quite clearly. The matches will be preceded by a specially selected programme of sports shorts. Patrons are advised to reserve their seats without delay at W. H. Saunders, Queen Street.
