PERSONAL.
The Rev Father Venning, S.M., of Otaki, is conducting a Mission for Maoris at Te Ore Ore. The death occurred at Wellington on Thursday last of Miss Grace Ellis. She was the sister of Mrs S. Pritchard, of Masterton.
Mr J. Dobson, Jersey stud stock breeder, of New Plymouth, is visiting Masterton and is staying with Mr and Mrs Alfred Hoar, Church Street. Mr I. F. Bowden, of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., Masterton, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington, and will leave tomorrow to take up his new position. Sir Theophilus and Lady Metcalfe, Surrey, England, arrived at Wellington by the Awatea today to attend the golden wedding on August 18 of Lady Metcalfe’s parents, Mr and Mrs W. M. Wright, Hataitai. The funeral of the late Mrs Catherine Jaques, which took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon, was largely attended. Many beautiful wreaths were .in evidence. The Rev Father N. Moore officiated. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. Jaques, W. Jaques, N. Carrie, O. Dudson, F. Palmer and J. Percy. Lieutenant S. B. Wallace, New Zealand Staff Corps, Timaru, and Mrs Wallace, who arrived at Auckland by the Akaroa from England, were passengers to Wellington by the Limited express from the north on Saturday. Lieutenant Wallace has been undergoing training in England for two years and a half.
Mr C. P. McMeekan, who has been on leave of absence from his position as an assistant lecturer at Massey College during the past two years, has passed the examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Cambridge University. Mr McMeekan has been studying at the School of Agriculture. Cambridge.
Having been transferred to Wellington as senior stipendiary magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout will shortly take up his new position. After presiding at the Levin court for the last time on Friday, regret at his impending departure from the district was expressed by the bar, Messrs D. P. Todd, N. M. Thomson. W. P. Rollings and J. P. M. Bertram, all of whom expressed the hope that Mr Stout's arduous duties in the country would be followed by a long life in which to enjoy the work in Wellington.
