LABOUR PARTY WELCOME

MR SAVAGE ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED. GATHERING IN MUNICIPAL HALL. There was a very large attendance in the Municipal Hall on Saturday night, when the Prime Ministre, the Rt Hon M. J. Savage, was welcomed and entertained by the Masterton branch of the Labour Party. In welcoming Mr Savage, who was greeted with prolonged cheers and applause, Mr R. N. Shaw, chairman of the Masterton Labour Representation Committee, paid a tribute to him as the “little man with a big heart.” Mr J. Robertson, M.P., briefly reviewed what he described as the Prime Minister’s triumphal tour, and Mr P. H. Paku welcomed Mr Savage on behalf of the Maori race. The Hon P. C. Webb, Minister of Employment, said the Government had faithfully carried out the pledges it had made to the working people, and he described the Labour movement as the greatest and grandest movement that ever throbbed in the heart of man. While there was not a million chance in the world of the Government being defeated at the polls, it behoved all supporters of the party to rally round and stand firmly together.

During the evening an excellent programme of musical items was presented, including a haka of welcome to the Minister by members of the Maori race. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, was among those present.
