SUCCESS OF BRIGHT IDEA
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Patience was well rewarded when the three-year-old Bright Idea scored his first success in the Fitzroy Handicap on the third day of the Auck- ■ land Racing Club’s Winter Meeting, as he was kept in work for a long period without being required to do much racing. Actually he had only jT-rUiis fifth start when he won and h? has made steady pr.-gress since shewing his first glimpse of form by running second at Whangarei in April. Bred and trained by J. M. Buchanan, he is the first foal’ of his dam and is by Appellant from Good Idea, by Quin Abbey from Mountain Dream, by Mountain King from Moorooroo, by Trenton. The manner in which Bright Idea ran out the mile in his winning effort indicated that he is likely to go further and this impression is strengthened by his good breeding. Like other members of his family, he possesses ability to act well in heavy going. Valmint’S displays at the Great Northern meeting Were similar to last year. He was narrowly beaten in the Cornwall Handicap and then failed when heavily backed in the York Handicap. Not a robust horse, Valmint is a capable galloper who may soon get a.winning turn. Only one race was given All Irish at Ellerslie. He was third in the Remuera Hurdles, but did not do as well as expected and was probably a little short after his injury at Te Rapa. All Irish is a good jumper whose turn will come a little'later on.
The Shambles gelding Culverden, who is engaged in the steeplechase to be run at Oamaru, has started five times this season without gaining a place. He is an aged gelding from Heath Lass, who is a half-sister to Pitcrop and also the dam of Royal Saxon and Hounslow. Culverden was foaled in. 1928.
A first and second at Ellerslie ■ by Mai de Mer showed the brother to Flood Tide to be on the up grade? He has been a long time in getting on the winning list, but evidently likes soft going and he has the condition to continue racing well.
A good galloper of last'season,, Gay iff. better condition.. Like most of the Gay Shields, he acts well in bad going and he may repay watching in his next few outings.
W. Rennie, one-time leading hurdle horseman, who broke his neck when Modern Maid crashed at the first hurdle at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, 1936, has received a letter from the Racing Conference advising his that, acting on medical advice, the conference has decided that it is impossible for him again to earn his living by riding horses, and suggesting that he should try to obtain a job as’ a liftman. Rennie was apprenticed to R. Hannon, the Cambridge owner-trainer, and was associated with that stable throughout his riding career, which lasted close on 20 years. It was also a Hannon-trained horse that brought about his mishap, for Modern Maid was in the stable at that time. Rennie had his first winning ride in a hurdle race during the Christmas meeting at Ellerslie in 1919 on Rekanui. Rennie rode three winners of the Great Northern Hurdle Race- —Wedding March in 1927, Prince Lu in 1931, and Landmark in 1932. He was successful on only one horse in the Steeplechase, Billy Boy, in 1936.
Garbo and Lady Rosette, two-year-old fillies in Mrs J. Campbell’s stable, have made good progress in recent weeks. The former has already raced, but Lady Rosette may have her first outing at the Westport meeting to be held at Riccarton on July 9. By Lord Warden frpm Quality, dam of Vintage, Lady Rosette is a fine looking filly, who looks as if she will develop into a splendid type as a three-year-old, before which she is not likely to show to the advantage which may be expected later on.
The rising two-year-old colt by Dark Fox from Our Legion, purchased by Mr A. D. Potter at the Sydney sales, has had the name Dark Legion claimed for him. The colt, who has made his appearance on the track at Ellerslie, shows plenty of size and quality, and is a three-quarter brother to Dark Chief, a good performer in Melbourne.
F. D. Jones has four rising two-year-olds in his team, and report states they are a likely lot. Night Shift, a colt by Nightly from Minehead, is small, but shapes well. Her dam is a half-sister to Pitprop, a very good galloper of English breeding. This filly was bred by her trainer, who is a partner-with Mr E. G. McCullough in a promising colt by Myosotis from Morbird. A filly by Lord Warden from Anthem is a sister to Viking, and looks a promising galloper. A colt by Excitement from Calcite has been in the stable only a few weeks, having been brought at the Sydney Easter sales. He is a good sort, though not tried yet. It is of interest to recall that his dam, Calcite, an imported mare by Rock Flint, was trained by Jones. Calcite’s yearling colt will be raced by Mr H. S. Williams, well known in Christchurch business circles: He has a wide circle of friends, who will wish him well in his first venture as an owner.
The well-performed Dungarven, who has been off the scene for just over a year, may reappear at the Dannevirke Hunt meeting.
The imported sallion Myosotis, who has been in Canterbury during the past couple of seasons, has been sold to an Australian buyer. A speedy hack when racing a couple of seasons ago, the Acre gelding Gloucester has been acquired by the Ellerslie owner-trainer, Mr W. Taylor, who intends putting him to the jumping game. Trebleack is back in work, and Milford and Paladino are booked to rejoin R. McLellan’s stable in the near future. Waitoru will not be raced again until next season.
