BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION COMPETITION. RESULTS OF SATURDAY'S GAMES. Games in the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s competition on Saturday last resulted as follow: — A GRADE. lona beat College I, 18 —11. College II beat Technical Old Girls, 15—10. Stars I beat High School Old Girls, 18—12. Stars II and High School Old Girls II drew, 17 all. B GRADE. lona beat Hospital, 16 —12. Technical Old Girls beat College 111, 13—2. Dalefield beat College IV, 18—1. Carterton beat College 11, 24—0. College beat Stars222.1 —2. Easily the best game of the day was that between lona and College 1, quick and hard-fought all .through. lona led nearly all the time, the score at half-time being lona 9, College 6. The lona team was surer in catching and cleverer in interception than the College one and their defenders kept the College forwards very much occupied. B. Stett missed few opportunities at interception., The College forwards did not play as well as usual, though there were several good goals from P. Baskiville. These forwards would do very much better to practise throwing into space instead of directly to a player. They lost the ball over and over again as soon as it came into forward third. With the exception of M. Carroll, College defenders were outplayed by lona. Several times the College passing right up the field was excellent and the understanding among the centres is much better than it was, although the throw-off was lost once or twice. P. Hanley worked hard, as [ usual, among the lona forwards and shot some clever goals. The Stars I v High School Old Girls I game was disappointing from the spectators’ point of view, both teams adopting long passing. Stars forwards had some bright moments of quick passing, the best player in this third being J. Bensemann, who shot spectacularly from a distance three or four times. Stars defenders are easily the best part of the team, and probably form the finest defensive combination in any team now playing. High School Old Girls forwards were not up to their usual standard, partly owing to this excellent defence. Lorna Renner was an outstanding defender for Old Girls, and also in this third C. Butler intercepted well, but she is too slow at passing the ball on. Centre play in both teams was disappointing, with the exception of J. Russell’s, which was very quick and intelligent. College II had a very closely fought game with Technical Old Girls. For College, Heather Leitch played an outstanding game among the forwards, well supported by I. Shoosmith. Among the defenders Nola Wilson was quick and intercepted well. B. Grade players are failing largely because they handle the ball so badly. They fumble, drop the ball and fail to pass on neatly, all faults which can easily be corrected by consistent practise in ball exercises. It is also very obvious in this grade that goal throwers rely far too much on possible natural ability and do not practise nearly enough. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. At the conclusion of the games a practise was held of girls nominated for the representative team. The following were chosen to go into training and to practise next Saturday:— Possibles:—Forwards: P. Hanley, N.Cohen, J. Gemmell; centres: P. Kilmister, R. Edwards, J. Russell; defenders: L. The following are the nominations:— Technical Old Girls: Margaret Palmer; High School Old Girls: Carmel Butler; Iona: Hazel Beech; College: Maureen Carroll: Carterton: Lorna Smith; Dalefield: Eileen Garrett; Stars: Monica Gadsby; Hospital: . EXECUTIVE MEETING. An executive meeting or the Basketball Association was held during the week, when the principal business discussed was the formation of a Referees’ Association. It was decided to
form one and to affiliate with the New Zealand Association. Officers were elected as follow: — President: Miss R. Edwards; vice-pre-sident: Miss P. Kilmister; secretary and treasurer: Miss B. Venner. Eighteen members of the Basketball Association have signified their intention of sitting for the referee’s examination which will be held in a few weeks’ time.
