Success of Concrete Roads.

Although Auckland has over 26 miles of its busiest streets paved with concrete, the cost of maintaining these modern and highly satisfactory surfaces is still extremely low. Most of these streets have been paved for approximately 20 years. In his review of the operations of his department for the year ended March 31, the city engineer, Mr J. Tyler, gives the cost of maintenance of the 26.8 miles of concrete streets, with an area of 516,010 square yards, at £565, an average of .26d per square yard, as against .23d for the previous year. When these streets were laid down it was considered that they would have a life of between- 30 and 40 years, but they have given such excellent service that it is now thought that their effective life will be 50 years or more.
