BADMINTON

AUSTRALIA v. WAIRARAPA. MATCH AT MASTERTON ON WEDNESDAY. Great interest is being taken in the visit of the Australian badminton team to Mastertpn on Wednesday, June 22. This is the first visit of any overseas badminton team to New Zealand. Mr Devlin, past all-England champion, considered the standard of play in Australia to be high and equal to that of New Zealand. One of the members of the visiting team is credited with having won a game against Mr Devlin in Australia. The Wairarapa team is a very strong one as it includes the present New Zealand champion, P. Hawksworth, and North Island title holders in Mrs Hawksworth and J. J. Payton. so that the standard of play should be high and the games very keenly contested. The Regent Theatre will show “shorts” from 7.45 o’clock to 8.30 o’clock and these will include gymnastics, basketball technique, “Ps. & Qs” (billards) and Bpbby Jones on golf. His Worship the Mayor will welcome the visitors at 8.30 p.m. and the match will commence immediately afterwards on a court erected on the stage of the Regent Theatre. This court was considered by Mr Devlin to be the best that he played on in New Zealand. Seats may be reserved at the shop of Mr W. H. Saunders, Queen Street. As booking is brisk the public are advised to secure their seats early.
