GENTLEMEN’S REPLY
WARD HEAVILY PUNISHED WYATT’S STRANGE DISPLAY. FINGLETON PASSES CENTURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 16. The weather was fine and warm for the resumption of the match between Australia and the Gentlemen. Wilcox and Wyatt, continuing the Gentlemen’s first innings, played steadily against Waite and White. The wicket was a little faster than was the case yesterday, and Ward, although occasionally he beat the batsmen, received heavy punishment. A MIXED DISPLAY. Wyatt was out to an easy catch at mid-on, after a strange display of confidence and uncertainty. He was never quite able to master Ward, who was spinning the ball quickly from the leg side. Bradman did not field as he was suffering from sore eyes, believed to be due to the dust at Nottingham. Hammond was out to a surprisingly weak stroke in Waite’s second over. Wilcox reached 50 in 105 minutes, and was out in the next over. COURAGEOUS BATTING Courageaus and intelligent batting by Yardley and Valentine restored the Gentlemen’s failing fortunes and added 50 runs in half an hour after lunch. Both were out when one short of the half century. Yardley spooned one to the covers, and Valentine was easily caught in the slips. Splendid batting by Brown saved a follow on. Brown hit with enormous power. He added 33 in ten minutes, and reached 88 in an hour. Going for another bit hit with the last man in, he was caught in the covers. His score included fifteen boundaries. The gentlemen’s innings lasted 245 minutes. Australia reopened at 4.5 p.m. Fingleton, who was unusually bright, and Brown raised 50 in forty minutes, of which Fingleton contributed 37. He continued to score twice as fast as Brown, who appeared to be under the impression that he was still saving the test match. The partnership was worth 112 when Brown was caught in the first slip. FEROCIOUS DRIVING Eleven thousand spectators saw Badcock pull and drive ferociously and Fingleton reach an exceptionally fast century in 125 minutes. After remaining for 10 minutes on 99, Fingleton was eventually caught in the slips just before stumps were drawn for the day. He batted 140 minutes and hit 10 4’s in a chanceless and enterprising display. The scores are as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First innings 397 Second Innings.
