The Federal Government was defeated. by 37 votes to 25 in the House of Representatives, when eleven Government supporters crossed the floor to vote for a Labour amendment, excluding life insurance offices from the right to become approved societies under the National Health Insurance scheme. Although the clause was considered to be important, the carrying of the amendment will not affect the passage of the Bill through the House.
