SOFT GOODS TRADE
STATEMENT BY WELLINGTON EMPLOYERS. UNION OFFICIAL’S REPORT CHALLENGED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Remarks reported to have been' made by the secretary of the Wellington Clothing Workers’ Union to the effect that there was no slackening in employment in the clothing trade as far as the union was concerned, were refered to by the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation in a statement last night. “We regret to state that the employment situation in the soft goods trade in Wellington is not at all good,” the federation says. “The position of the various industries within the clothing trade for the Dominion as a whole is far from satisfactory. Not only have various firms been compelled to make substantial reductions in staff, but others are working short time. If 100 operatives are working only three days a week, this is equivalent to unemployment for 40 workers. Unemployment numbers do not, as a rule, allow for this phase of the question. “The statement by the secretary of the ’Wellington union will not be endorsed by other union secretaries in the industry, and will be the reverse of helpful to his fellow-unionists in their efforts to cope with the situation,” the federation added.
