MATCH AT LORDS
HALF EMPTY STANDS AUSTRALIANS MEET GENTLEMEN. BRADMAN SCORES A CENTURY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 15. The Australians did not feel much like cricket today as a grey sky and half empty stands greeted them for the high sounding, but not very significant match against the Gentlemen at Lords. The Gentlemen’s team is as follows: W. R. Hammond (Gloucestershire), B. H. Valentine (Kent), R. E. S. Wyatt (Warwickshire), J. W. A. Stephenson (Essex), D. R. Wilcox (Essex), F. G. H. Chalk (Kent), N. W. D. Yardley (Yorkshire), F. R. Brown (Surrey), R. J. Meyer (Somerset), D. H. Macindoe (Oxford University), and P. A. Gibb (Yorkshire). Australia won the toss and elected to bat. Fingleton and Brown opened the innings and batted quietly, raising 64 runs against the bowling of Maclndoe and Stephenson. The partnership was eventually broken by Meyer, the only cricketer whom the Australians had hitherto not played against. He bowled slow, medium off-spinners, round the wicket, with two men close in on the leg side. TWO WICKETS GO QUICKLY. Brown was the first to go, and a few minutes later, with the score at 71, Fingleton also fell a victim to Meyer. Both batsmen were caught by Gibb McCABE BATS BRISKLY.. After raising one hundred runs in 105 minutes McCabe batted briskly but Badcock continued cautiously. Badcock was completely deceived by Brown’s googly, expecting it to pass well outside the wicket. He did not attempt a stroke. McCabe was in glittering form and batted faultlessly until he was caught in the slips. His dashing innings of 100 minutes included one 6 and seven 4’s. Bradman, who was seemingly not troubled by his leg strain, batted briskly. Chipperfield was also going along nicely after a run of failures. His score of 51 occupied 100 minutes, and included seven boundaries. It was a sound display. BRADMAN HITS OUT. Bradman soon afterwards reached 50 in 50 minutes. Then he hit Stephenson for three consecutive 4’s. Waite and Barnett failed to get going, but White opened with a sixer off a no-ball from Meyer. The Australian captain reached his century in 110 minutes. Then, in trying to sweep Meyer to the boundary he was caught at deep square leg. In a gay and chanceless innings he hit thirteen 4’s. The Australian innings closed after 345 minutes play. WHITE’S HIGHEST SCORE. White, who was undefeated, batted for an hour. His score included one' 6 and eight 4’s. He registered, his highest score in England. The Gentlemen commenced their innings at 6 p.m. Wilcox and Gibb opened crisply, but five minutes before stumps were drawn Bradman took a running catch at mid-on, to dismiss Gibb. Stephenson, who was sent in as a stopgap, was out in the same over. The scores were as follow: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
