BEAUTIFUL ROSES

EXHIBITION IN PARIS. The red rose of Lancashire and the white rose of York figured in an exhibition of the Rose in Nature and Art which opened on May 15 at Bagatelle, on the fringe of the Bois de Boulogne. Twelve rooms were devoted to this exhibition, and here M. Jean-Louis Vaudoyer, curator of the Carnavelet Museum of the History of Paris, as-

sembied a wonderful collection of everything connected with the rose. Paintings exhibited showed the rose , as seen by the artists of ancient Persia and Japan, and the rose in illuminated missals and tapestries of the Mid- : die Ages, to roses painted by Renoir, Manet and Van Gogh. Representative . of the red and white roses of the War ; of the Roses were a number of ancient standards, armlets, and other souvenirs ■ to be loaned by English collectors. The rose in literature was illustrated ■

by exhibits of books on the rose, especially rare editions of the Romance of the Rose, of the thirteenth century. Furniture decorated with roses. China-ware of Strassburg and Marseilles having the rose as principal pattern, with roses made out of shells and other materials completed this novel and beautiful exhibition. It is appropriate that this exhibition was held at Bagatelle, famous for its rose garden, to which all Paris flocks when the roses are in bloom.
