STATE THEATRE.
A SIDE-SPLITTING COMEDY. A chance to take a peep behind the Hollywood scenes is provided by “Stand-In,” the side-splitting Walter Wanger comedy, starring Leslie Howard and Joan Biondell, which will be shown at the State Theatre for three days commencing tonight. “Stand-In” tells the story of Mr Atterbury Dodd, the shy young banker who went to Hollywood, took over a 10,000,000 dollar studio and tried to run it accor/i--ing to the science of mathematics. Joan Biondell has her finest role as the “Stand-Iri“ of the title, who helps the' bewildered Mr Dodd over the Hollywood hurdles, falls in love with him and makes him realise that there are other things in life beside adding machines. Humphrey Bogart plays Quintain, the genius producer. Alan Mowbray has his maddest and funniest role as Koslofski, Marla Shelton, the lovely new Wanger discovery, plays Cheri, C. Henry Gordon is his usual villainous self as Nassau and Jack Carson, an unknown “bit” player, won overnight fame in the role of Potts, the pesky press agent. Gene Towne and Graham Baker, Hollywood's inimitable writing team, wrote the screenplay for “Stand-In.”
