The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Neville Chamberlain, in the House of Commons said the placing of antiaircraft guns on warships near the Spanish ports, with the order to fire on approaching aircraft, was tantamount to direct intervention and the Government was not prepared to embark on retaliatory action. Mr Chamberlain said the possibility of providing safety zones was being discussed. The Leader of the Opposition. Major C. R. Attlee, announced that the issue would be raised later.
