TAUERU BRIDGE

IMMEDIATE REPAIRS NECESSARY.

120 ft. SPAN AFFECTED. “Immediate repairs should be carried out to make the bridge safe," stated the Overseer, Mr B. L. Larson, in a special report on the condition of the Taueru bridge, submitted to yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County' Council. The bottom chord on the main truss span of the bridge, Mr Larson stated, was badly decayed at the south-west abutment. The inner and outer flitches on the upstream side were badly affected by dry rot. Immediate repairs should be carried out to make the bridge safe. The affected span was 120 ft long and approximately 60 to 70ft above the river.

The Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, said the bridge was thirty-five years old. When the council spent £lOO on it two years ago it was estimated that the life of the bridge was 6 to 8 years. It would now appear, however, that there was very little life in it at all. He suggested that an estimate be obtained of the cost of renewing the bridge and that the amount be included in the council’s application for a bridge construction loan.
