WHEEL CHANGING

WHEN THE SPARE IS CALLED ON. CONSIDER OTHER ROAD USERS. Some drivers are thrown into' a panic immediately a tyre deflates, and, regardless of whether the car is in the middle of the road or on a bend they stop forthwith, jack up, and change the wheel. Due consideration must be given to other road users, and no great harm will be done by driving slowly a few yards farther on so that the car can be parked where it is not a nuisance to • other traffic. Never brake heavily when a tyre deflates.

If a near-side tyre has to be changed do not draw in so closely to the curb, however, that it is impossible to remove the wheel from the studs. Allow a foot, to give room in which to work.

If the car has to be jacked up on a hill it is advisable to put chocks under the other wheels in addition to the full application of the hand brake as a measure of protection against the car slipping. The wheel stud nuts can be slackened before the car is raised from the ground on the jack; this is particularly advisable with a front wheel which is not controlled by the hand brake, as its tendency to rotate when jacked up would make undoing the nuts a rather difficult operation. Similarly the final tightening can be done when the wheels are lowered to the ground.
