SPEEDWAY SMASH
CAR DASHES INTO CROWD
WOMAN & TWO GRANDCHILDREN KILLED.
TWELVE OTHERS INJURED.

A racing car doing 80 miles an hour dashed over the embankment at Penrith Speedway today into a crowd of spectators and killed an elderly woman and her two grandchildren and injured 12 others.
The crowd of more than 10,000 was horrified when the car, driven by W. James, skidded, bounced high ovei' the parapet and finished upright in the centre of a group of picnickers, scattering scores of other people. James was practically uninjured.
The smash occurred only a few minutes after another car, driven by F. Foss, had hurtled over the edge of the track, somersaulted several times, and flung Foss and his” mechanic yards away. The car was wrecked. The dead are Mrs W. Jones, Fivelock, her grandchildren, Walter Baker, aged two, and Pamela Baker, aged five months.
The injured include the mother, Mrs Josephine Baker and two other children. Mrs Baker received a broken leg and head injuries and is in a critical condition. Betty Jones, aged seven, received a fractured leg.
F. Foss, aged 27, received a fractured thigh and concussion. H. Harris, aged 45, had several ribs broken. Others hurt are suffering from head and leg injuries and severe shock. Donald Bain, aged 33, whose motorcycle somersaulted on the speedway, received a fractured skull.
