A BAY OF PLENTY PROSPECT

(By “T he Cynic.”)

The Waikato hack Senacre ran goodraces at Avondale and Waikato and seems to be in her best form at present- She should be a bright prospect at the Bay of. Plenty meeting this week.

When Mio Lume fell in the second steeplechase at Te Rapa he was going strongly and may possibly have beaten the winner, Windsor Lad. If Mio Lume is right again at Tauranga he will seriously test the field in the Bay of Plenty Steeplechase.

Ohmaha has been putting some dash into his sprinting tasks at Ellerslie, but he is still a trifle backward, and it may be a little later before he is capable of reproducing his best form.

Erination, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles, is an eight-year-old gelding by Illumination from Erinagh, by Elysian from the Hotchkiss mare Cressy, her second dam being Crescent, by Castor from Pungawhere, the dam of Grack Shot. Erination has done very little ,-racihg this season and was having only his -sixth start. At the Auckland Easter Meeting he scored his only othei' success, winning the Brighton Hurdles, two miles, run in soft going.

One of the most promising of the younger jumpers engaged at the Aiick-

land Racing Club’s Winter Meeting is the flve-year-old gelding Bryce Street, by Little England from Chancit, by Swift Flight from Madam Rose, by Extractor from Alba Rose, by Seaton Delaval from Viex Rose, dam of the 1911 Auckland Cup winner Santa Rosa. There is some good staying blood in the pedigree of Bryce Street, and he has given the impression that he possesses the necessary stamina to achieve success over long journeys over fences. Trained at Te Rapa by M. J. Carroll, Bryce Street registered his best performance when he finished second to Huskie in the Te Rapa Steeplechase recently, and he is an improver who will disappoint if he fails to gain further prominence this winter.

The Lord Warden three-year-old gelding Gillie was an outstanding failure at Wingatui, being beaten a long way from home on both days. Silkwood ricked herself slightly when contesting the Silverstream Handicap at Wingatui, being beaten a long way from home on both days.

Rival Hit is in trouble again, this time with a broken pelvis, but Mr Roy Stewart, who has him in his care, is confident that the injury will knit in time to permit Rival Hit’s preparation for the spring. Rival Hit was purchased in New Zealand by Mr F. W. Hughes, but he has been in veterinary care almost since he arrived in Sydney. First of- all he had stomach trouble that nearly brought about his death. Then he contracted a poisoned leg. After that had been cleared up a cyst developed in his back. This was removed and in due course Rival Hit was put into work. He won at Warwick Farm at the last meeting on that course, and the way seemed clear for a successful winter campaign. The latest accident occurred when Rival Hit was being exercised. Although he had skids on all four feet to guard against slipping on the bitumen roads, he came down heavily. Mr Stewart has devised a plaster cast to keep the injured bone in position, but this allows sufficient movement to enable Rival Hit to be as comfortable as possible. The horse will be given absolute rest.

Second. Innings won his third race on end when he annexed the St. Clair Handicap at Wingatui. He won in a maimer which suggests that he will continue in winning vein for he was going away from the field at the finish. Second Innings is a. four-year-old bay gelding by Winning Hit from the Clar-.enceux-Volbdja mare Lady Clarenceux and is trained by E. Redmond, of Spotswood.

Remembo showed encouraging form

on both the first and second days of the Dunedin Winter Meeting. Remembo is a four-year-old gelding by Balboa from the Maniapoto-Pretty Helen mare Sweet Memory, thus the dam of Paladino, Nightcalm and Membo.

The one-time smart galloper Silver Jubilee, who\>nce was considered good enough to take to Australia, was stepped out as a hurdler at Napier Park.

Silver Jubilee did not win, or even pay a dividend, but he made a very good showing and left the impression that he would not be long in winning over the obstacles. He stripped in nice condition, but looking as if a race would improve him. In the race he was prominent all the way, assisting Agog in making the running till the straight was reached. Then he failed to come on as strongly as he was expected to, and he finished a fair fourth. He jumped well, and should develop into a very useful hurdler.

Lapeil, who was formerly trained at Feilding, joined C. Thompson’s team at Awapuni this week. Thomson's team has also been augmented by the addition of Rolling Home and a two-year-old filly by Tidal from Cetus, thus a* half-sister to The Grasper.

It is the intention of Mr Desmond Davis that Flood Tide shall undergo another preparation for the Melbourne Cup, a race in which he would have competed last year but for a minor mishap. After his spring campaign Flood Tide will be tried as a hurdler, and as he is partial to heavy going, apart from his physique, he should soon become a proficient jumper.

The name of Serehata has been claimed for the rising two-year-old Nightmarch—Praise Ally whom Mr A. Louisson declined to , sell at 200 guineas at the Jaunary sales. This youngster is a full-sister to Russian Ballet, winner of the G.N. Champagne Stakes. .

The Dominion-bred Gascon Chief, who was sold a little over twelve months ago by Mr C. Haldane, of Hastings, to Mr W. T. Kelly, of Brisbane, won his first race for his new owner recently at Doomben,. Queensland. Gascon Chief, who was bred by Mr Haldane, is a three-year-old by Gasconly from the Chief Ruler —Soot mare Chief Salute. He had only two starts in the Dominion, winning at the Waipawa meeting and later being second at a Hawke’s Bay meeting. He was sold by Mr Haldane for a price reported to be 750 guineas.

It is rather extraordinary how horses in the big races at Auckland this season have scorned the handicaps awarded them. The Buzzer won the Auckland Cup carrying 61b overweight, Francis Drake won the Easter Handicap with 51b overweight, and now Valpeen comes along and put up 21b overweight in the Great Northern Steeples.

Dutiful and Pharaoh, two horses owned by Mr J. Harris and trained by J. T. Jamieson, were transferred last week, Pharaoh to Melbourne, and Dutiful to the stable of S. R. Lamond, jun. Dutiful won a race at Rosehill as recently as May 25 and the transfer came as a surprise.

Mr Harris stated subsequently that he and the trainer were the best of friends, but there was a slight difference of opinion as to the horses. Foi’ that reason both thought that it would be better, if they were placed with other trainers.

Though he has lost Dutiful and Pharaoh, Jamieson still has a strong team, including Lynch Law, who is to go to Brisbane, Country Party, Improvement, Kai Tere, and the winning two-year-olds, Normal, Activity, and respirator. The last-named is a very promising colt by Windbag (sire of Chatham) from Recuperator, and is owned by Messrs G. and H. Tancred.

In the Park Steeplechase Dozie broke down badly at the second last jump, and then, practically on three legs, she outjumped Kahunoke at the final fence. She then battled on gamely to finish in third place. It is reported that she is in a bad way, and in all probability the last of this game little fencer has been seen on the race track.

Prosy Boy, bearing a burly appearance, has been recommissioned. In seven starts in cross-country events, Prosy Boy has won five and was sec-

ond in the other two. He has not had a start for a couple of seasons.

The four-year-old Skerryvore jumps well and may develop into a first-class steeplechased. His form at Napier, the second day, flattered him a little, as Dozie had broken down and Kahunoke was stopping at the flush.

If Pasch had won this year's Derby Blandford would have achieved the splendid record of siring five winners of the Derby. Pasch beat the best in England, but France supplied something better.

The Last Dart gelding Last Link, who was engaged in the Greenfield Hurdles, has not been seen out since the Dunedin Cup meeting, when he put up two unplaced performances. He has started 14 times this season for five placings and one win. The win was scored at the New Zealand Cup meeting, where he won the Port Coopei Brush Hurdles with 9.7 from Red Sun 11.2 and John Charles 10.6. Superex 9.0 was unplaced. A subsequent placed performance was on the flat at the Vincent. meeting.

Some years ago Mr W. T. Hazlett purchased two mares, Simper and Sprig of Erin. They were both beautifully bred, and at the time of purchase one seemed as good a proposition as the other. Mr Hazlett paid 1100 guineas for Simper and 500 guineas for Sprig of Erin. Simper was got by Symington —Cheyls, by Sir Visto— Chelandry, by Goldfinch—llluminata, by Rosicrucian. Sprig of Erin was got by DesmondSweet Vernal, by Sainfoin—Musa, by Martagan, the sire of Martian. Sprig of Erin produced several foals, but not with the same result as Simper, who is the dam of Affection (bred by Mr J. B. Reid), Illume (bred by Mr R. Morrison), and for Mr Hazlett Gold Light, Razzle Dazzle, Dazzling Light, Beacon Light, Glad Light, Lucky Light, Speed Light, Ruling Light and Sir Simper. The best known of Sprig of Erin s stock are Irish and Father O’Flynn. Now Sprig of Erin is recalled by the fact that Wild Irishman traces back to her. He was got by Gustavo from Wild Erin, by Woodend —Wild Colleen, by Kilbroney—Sprig of Erin.
