MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.
(“Times-Age” Special.)
At the meeting of the Borough Council last night there were present the Mayor (Mr C. W. Skill), Crs M. A. Hardie (treasurer), C. R. Holmes, G. P. Cotter, M. Mulvaney, W. F. Gundice, M. Corfield, I. A. Hamilton, P. R. Plummer and D. Green. A letter was received from J. A. Berridge, junior, asking the Council to form an urban farm lands list. —The clerk explained this had lapsed on March 31 for this year, and no applications had been made. The applicant is to be informed that his request could not be considered. J. J. Killip wrote asking permission to fence off the road at his property. — It was decided not to accede to the request. A letter was received from E. L.Richardson complaining of the state of New York Street.—lt was decided that the matter be attended to. T. Richmond wrote drawing attention to the blockage of a drain near his property.—This matter is to be given attention. A letter was received from the Centennial Exhibition Committee asking the Council to send a delegate to the conference on June 14. —The Mayor was appointed to represent the council. A letter from the Wairarapa Aero Club requesting a donation to its funds was received.
The Municipal Fire Brigade invited the Mayor and Councillors to the annual re-union. The clerk reported that a complaint had been received from the police in connection with damage done by pigs and turkeys owned by a local resident. It was resolved that the offending ratepayer be notified that he must conform to the by-laws. An application by Boyd and Son for permission to erect another petrol pump was granted. It was reported that receipts since the last meeting had been £192 Us 3d. Accounts passed for payment totalled £415 12s sd. The Works Committee reported that footways were being graded for sealing. Councillor A. Hamilton was added to the committee. Repairs were reported as necessary to the town hall, and were authorised to be done. The ranger reported that he had impounded 26 head of stock during the month. Some person, he stated, had illegally removed a horse from the pound. The rates for 1938-39 were confirmed, and it was decided that legal action be taken to recover outstanding rates. RADIO CLUB MEETING The weekly meeting of the Radio Club was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Sidney Bell, Greytown last evening. About a dozen members attended, and were very' cordially welcomed by Mr and Mrs Bell. At the committee meeting held during the evening, Mr R. J. Wright presided. New members elected were Miss M. Davey and Mr Gordon Findlay. The first lecture for the season will be given on July 4, and the club’s social will be held on Monday, June 27. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Bell for their hospitality. Supper was served after which an informal talk was held. PERSONAL. Mr Milton Gair will sever his connection with the firm of Messrs Pain and Kershaw Ltd. on Saturday. He will commence work with the Self Help in Wellington next Monday.
