VALPEEN’S GOOD RECORD
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Valpeen won the Grand National Steeplechase in 1934 with lOst., and in the following year with 11.13. He was ridden, on the first occasion by A. J. Peart, who was successful on Black Banner in the Otago Steeplechae last week. Valpeen carried 9.4 when he won the Great Northern Steeplechase in 1934.
The Cornwall Handicap winner, Cheval de Volee, was on the catalogue of the thoroughbred sale at Ellerslie. Mr A. Rowan is disposing of all his stock because of the difficulty of carrying out training during the remodelling of the Te Awamutu track.
Cintipa failed to make the most of the opportunity extended to him by the handicapper on the first day of the Dunedin meeting. He was second into the straight but was badly beaten at that stage and he also stopped on the second day after being one of the leaders to the home turn.
Amelita ran two bad races at Wingatui and was one of "the last to finish on both days. The Australian-bred
mare has had a fairly strenuous career and she will not be persevered with as a racing proposition.
After a spell on her owner's property at Te Awamutu, the brilliant performer Stretto has returned to R. S. Bagby’s stable at Ellerslie. She is looking fresh and healthy after her holiday and is in nice order to receive another preparation. Stretta is to be nominated for important events in Australia in the spring, but whether she makes the trip will depend upon the progress she makes in her training.
Sovereign Lady and Disdain are back in work at Riccarton. Tljeir stablemate, Rebellion, said far be better than Disdain, is also back in work. Rebellion was got by Robespierre from Silver Scorn’s half-sister, Muff, a daughter of the Chaucer horse Arrowsmith, who should on breeding make a good sire of brood mares.
It is a matter for regret that Soliad broke down on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting, as she appeared to be training on as likely to win over a distance. The trouble appeared to be serious, in the suspensory ligament, and she may not race again. She should, however, become valuable for the stud, as a daughter of Iliad from Scotch Wit, by The Ace—Scottish Star, by Clanranald —Safeguard, by Maxim — Teredo, by Apremont — Nautilus, by Traducer.
Dainty Verse, a four-year-old New Zealand-bred mare, by Iliad, from the Absurd mare Isa, is the latest to experience a run of success in races in V/estern Australia. When she won the main handicap of a mile and a quarter at the Western Australian Turf Club’s recent autumn meeting she scored her fourth win in successive starts. Two of the races were over seven furlongs, one oyer a furlong farther (the Western . Australian Turf Club’s Easter mile),’and the last one over a mile and a-quarter.
As winner of the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks, Rockfel is undisthe best filly of her year. Her sister,Mßockfoil, ran last in the Oaks in 1937. 'Rockliffe, their, dam, was also owned by Sir Hugo ' Cunliffe-Owen. and, like the daughters, trained by Captain O. M. Bell at Lambourn, Berkshire. Felstead, sire of Rockfel, won the Derby for Sir Hugo in 1928, and is still in that ownership, standing at a fee of 300 guineas. Rockliffe won races, including the Northumberland Autumn Plate, of one mile and a-half, in successive years, but did not contest any of the classics. • s<. y • There is a lot of interest, interwoven with the story ,of the ■ success-of the French-bred colt Bois Roussel in the English Derby. He was got by Vatout from Plucky Leige, by Spearmint from Concertina, by 'St. Simon — Comic Song, by Petrarch —Frivolity, by Macaroni—Miss Agnes, by Birdcatcher. Concertina is also the dam of the Carbine mare Playaway, who won the Newmarket Handicap of 1905 and the Caulfield Futurity Stakes of 1904. The imported horse Obligado, brought out by the late Mr G. G. Stead, also traces back to the same taproot as his granddam. Frivolity is also the grand-dam of Concertina. Obligado was bred in the Argentine, and sold as a yearling ■in England. Silver Peak, the dam of Triple Cone, was got by Adjudge from Oblong, a mare by Obligado. The line has also been made successful in America by Sir Galahad HI, a son of Plucky Liege, so that we have the same strain winning at Wingatui, in the English Derby, Australia, France, and the United States. Bois Roussel cost 8000 guineas after winning a small race in France. He was bought by Mr Peter Beatty, brother of Lord Beatty, and who recently inherited £200,000.
Finishing gallantly Huskie, hot favourite for the Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslje, came -into fifth position, passed the post and dropped dead. He had been choked by his own tongue which came over the bit on the hill the last time round.
“He was the gamest horse I ever rode,” said his jockey, Jack Muir, after the event. “That was why I changed to him from Erination.” “He was going well as he came up
the hill and I thought as we went over the first fence that he had only to jump the last two fences to win. “Just as we went over the second fence on the hill the last time round, I felt him lag and fail. His tongue had rolled round. He seemed to pull himself together as he climbed through the last fence and come on well. Bu/ just after we passed the post he fell. He lived for about three minutes afterwards. He had choked himself.” Muir has ridden Huskie in all his races this year, when Huskie, an eight-year-old gelding owned by Mr P. Corbett, of Matamata, has shown himself one of the best jumpers of the year. He came to prominence as a steeplechase possibility on the first day at Te Rapa. His second place in the Great Northern Hurdles was splendidly won.
Red Cockade put up an improved performance at Napier Park and may take a leading part in the decision of a middle-distance hack event in the near future.
Schooling apparently has made Hamarin more solid, for she has won on her last two appearances. Now she is to. be given further opportunities on the flat before being raced as a hurdler. Dorado, who resumed racing at Otaki after a good spell, may not be long in reaching winning condition. Galteemore is to be spelled for three months. He has raced 29 times this season, winning three races and over £BOO in stakes. AUCKLAND MEETING SMILIN’ THRU WINS STEEPLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 11.
