STOCK IMPORTS

DIRECT SHIPMENTS URGED.. (By Telegraph—Press Association). INVERCARGILL, June 12. Proposals by Mr Lloyd Hammond for the direct importation of live stock from countries suffering from foot-and-mouth disease were approved at the Southland Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. Mr G. Chewings, who moved the remit, said that stock were coming into New Zealand at present from countries where foot-and-mouth disease was prevalent. Under Mr Hammond’s scheme stock must be domiciled in a “clean” area for 12 months before they could be shipped. That eliminated any chance of a carrier doing any harm.
