CHEAPER RATES
INTRA-EMPIRE TELEGRAPHS. OTTAWA, Canada. Canadian users of intra-Empire telegraphs will save about 50,000 dollars a year under the new Empire cable and wireless rates effective on April 25. A flat rate of 30 cents or Is 6d a word will apply on all cable and ra-dio-telegraphic messages within the Empire, except in cases where the existing rate is less than that as in the prevailing rates between Canada and the United Kingdom.
The new rates will be: “CDE” (code), 20 cents per word; “LC” (deferred), 15 cents per word, and “NLT” (night letters), 10 cents per word, the latter being based upon a minimum of 25 words. The full rate from Vancouver to Hong Kong has been 83 cents per word. From Winnipeg to India it was 60 cents per word; from Toronto and all points east to South Africa 50 cents per word. These and all other rates above the maximum of 30 cents are now to be unified.
Tn announcing the new rates, the Hon. C. D. Howe, Canadian Minister of Transport, said: “If the future is to be judged by past experience that exports and imports follow the channel of cheaper communications, then it may confidently be anticipated that in-tra-Empire trade will benefit immeasurably by the new Imperial service, which, it is believed, will find reflection in an increased flow of traffic, permitting the recovery of losses sustained by the telegraph administrations during the period of development.”
