HARRIER ACTIVITIES
RALLY AT DANNEVIRKE KIATERE SECURE TWO SECONDS On Saturday eleven members of the Kiatere Harrier Club journied to Dannevirke to compete there in the annual harrier rally, and met with considerable success to be placed second in both the A and B grade races. Owing to several members being unable to make the trip, a slight alteration in the teams, as originally selected, was necessary. The following runners represented the club: —A grade: W. McDonald, R. Greeks, W. Burgess, A. McDonald, R. Serancke, W. Burns. B Grade —B. Stewart, B. Falloon, J. Bell, A. L. McDonald, J. Laing.
The rally attracted representatives from the Napier, Hastings, Marton, Woodville, Palmerston North, Dannevirke, Masterton, Kiatere, Wanganui and Scottish Harrier Clubs. The course was over a distance of 6} miles, and was practically the same as the one used last year. The A grade runners were started first, among whom were C. Weller, N.Z. champion, and J. Riddington, a leading Wellington harrier. At the end of the first lap, C. Weller (Palmerston North) D. Bruce and J. Bartlett (Scottish) led the field, followed by J. Riddington (Scottish), T. Taylor (Hastings), W. Burns (Kiatere) and R. Greeks (Kiatere). At this stage the last man in the Scottish team held eleventh place, and the last Kiatere runner twelfth place. Over the last lap J. Riddington went to the front, and soon established a good lead to run in a comfortable winner from C. Weller, J. Bartlett and D. Bruce, who finished together. The teams race resulted in a win for the Scottish Club who, therefore, retain the Anderson Shield. Kiatere were placed second, the team finishing in the following positions:—W. Burns seventh, R. Greeks ninth, A. McDonald eleventh and W. Burgess thirteenth. The Wanganui club secured third place. In the B grade event for the Anderson .Gate there was ai strong field as some of the clubs had entered for this race only. W. Preston of the Dannevirke Club took the lead early, and at no stage was he challenged. Owing to W. Preston not being an eligible start-
er, first place went to A. Cox (Scottish) with J. Scott (Palmerston North) second, and D. Oxenham (Palmerston North) third. The first Kiatere runner to finish was Basil Falloon, who filled fifth position, an outstanding performance for a harrier having his first race in open company. The other members of the Kiatere team finished as follows: —C. Bell, eighth, A. L. McDonald ninth, J. Laing tenth. This team gave the finest exhibition of team work at the Rally, credit for which must go to Austin McDonald, and actually had their complete team home first. By a narrow margin the teams’ event went to Palmerston North with Kiatere second, and Dannevirke third. MASTERTON CLUB SHORT RUN ON SATURDAY. The Masterton Harrier Club held a short run on Saturday afternoon on account of the . Indian Hockey Match. Three miles were covered, and a fast run home was held. There was a good attendance considering there was a Harrier Rally at Dannevirke.
