TRANSPORT LICENSING

♦_ SITTING OF THE AUTHORITY IN MASTERTON. CARRIAGE OF LIVE STOCK. A sitting of the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority was held in Masterton yesterday, Mr P. Skoglund presiding- . A renewal of a goods service licence until May 31, 1939 was granted to W. Allen, Masterton, in respect to a special contract for the carriage of mem from the Masterton Abattoir to WeiAn application by Martin Smith for a new passenger service licence for contract trips was agreed to, the licence being granted on the same conditions as those given in a similar licence granted previously to Mr A. J. Snelgrove. Ben Sewell, Carterton, applied foi a new passenger service licence to cover contract trips as far northward as Dannevirke and Feilding. .The application was opposed by Mr C. C. Marsack, who stated that Messrs Snelgrove and Smith had been doing contract work in the district for some years and were quite capable of coping with al that was offering without the allocation of an extra authority. As far as Mr Smith was concerned there was no objection to the applicant being allowed to carry football teams within a specified distance of Carterton. Mr Skoglund said that as the applicant had not been doing this work in the past he would not have been inclined to grant the application at al but if there was no objection to him carrying football teams he would grant a licence for that purpose. A licence was granted for the carriage of football teams within twenty miles of Carterton. The application of J. B. McLean, Masterton, for an amendment to a goods service licence in respect to an additional authority was opposed by Mr J. Macfarlane Laing but alter hearing applicant’s explanation the objection. was withdrawn. Applicant stated that he had purchased the business and had been told that it was .not necessary to have a licence for the carriage of cream. The business had always been running two trucks, one being engaged in the cartage o--Mr Skoglund granted the additional authority for cream cartage only.. A seasonal licence for the carriage of stock only was applied for by R. S. Tyacke, Masterton. The application was opposed by Mr Laing, who appeared on behalf of the Wairarapa Licensed Transport Federation. Mr T. Jordan, who appeared for applicant, said Tyacke had built up his business considerably in the past twelve months, during which period he had carried 26.000 head of sheep, for which one vehicle was not sumcient. Mr Jordan considered that the authority should from time to time review the licences granted, as a mar. who by his own industry had built up his business was entitled to consideration. . Setting forth the case of the objectors, Mr Laing said that it was felt that Tyacke, who was a member of the federation. should first of all have placed his application before the executive, and that it was the general view of the federation that the district was amply serviced at present. There had. he said, been a considerable increase in the number of vehicles equipped for the carriage of stock and some of thesd were from time to time idle because there was no stock for them to carry.

Regarding the number of vehicle authorities in existence at present, said Mr Skoglund, he was endeavouring to find out how many were being held and not being used. He felt that there were a number in that class. This matter would have to be cleared up and probably he would then be able to distribute vehicle authorities among genuine applicants. Seeing that the application simply meant enlarging the area of the licence he did not feel inclined to uphold the objection. A seasonal licence for the carriage of stock from November 1 to May 31 was granted to cover counties from Featherston to Eketahuna.
