TRUST ESTIMATES
GRANTS FOR CURRENT YEAR CAPITATION AND FREE SCHOOL BOOKS. MANY ITEMS IN PROPERTY ACCOUNT. The estimates as approved by the Masterton Trust Lands Trust last night provided a grant of £25 to the Plunket Society; £lO to the Y.M.C.A.; capitation grants to primary schools totalling £122 10s; free school books, £140; a special grant to Wairarapa College for books, £25, and, out of the scholarship account, £lO5 in University entrance grants and from the Memorial Park account £2O to the Wairarapa Rugby Union towards the cost of repairs at the Park. Some consideration was given to the making of grants to the Plunket Soc-‘ iety, Y.M.C.A. and Dental Clinic. Members expressed every desire to assist these bodies but the position was dominated by the finances of the Trust. It was explained that there was only a balance of £53 available to be distributed.
It was decided to make a grant of £25 to the Plunket Society and of £lO to the Y.M.C.A., the position in regard to the latter grant to be reviewed later in the year if necessary. It was stated that no application had been received from the Dental Clinic and that last year the Trust had remitted the rental of the rooms. The Education Committee’s recommendation that students in receipt of salary or allowances of £lOO or more should not be eligible for a Trust University entrance grant except in exceptional circumstances when the Trustees had power to give special consideration was adopted. The committee stated that it had taken that recommendation into - consideration when making its recommendations for grants for this year. Six applicants came under this heading.
The Trustees decided to make a special grant of £25 to a Masterton youth towards the cost of proceeding to America to further his studies in Y.M.C.A. secretarial work. Several members stated that the applicant had done particularly good work and deserved every assistance.
The Wairarapa Rugby Union wrote applying for financial assistance to meet the cost of repairs at Memorial Park. The state of the Union’s finances was such that it had no option. The position, it was stated was brought about by a falling off in the public patronage of Rugby and this could not be improved until the standard of play had been raised.
On the motion of Mr Jones it was decided to make a grant of £2O out of the No. 3 account (Memorial Park Account), in which, it was explained, there was a credit balance of £94.
