CADLAND’S SISTER APPEARS

(By

Snigger, a half-sister, by Laughing Prince, -to Cadland, made her turf debut at Otaki on Saturday and after being one of the leaders all the way in her division, she was beaten into third place. Snigger, who is owned by Mr T. A. Duncan, her breeder; is a beautifully-turned filly, attractively put together with strength over the loins and a good hind leg. Her only blemish is an overshot jaw. With conditions to suit her she will not take long to leave the maiden class.

Another of the Foxbridge tribe that has attracted attention is the rising two-year-bld. from that good producer:

“The Cynic.”)

Lady Marie. A relative of Gay Blonde, Gay Sheila and Gay Sheik, the newcomer is under A. Tinker’s charge at Takanini.

•Triple Cone was produced by a good mare in Silver Peak, a winner of the Great Autumn Handicap and several other races. Triple Cone showed speed on the first day at Dunedin but faded right out in the straight. He stayed on much better in the Novice Handicap.

McHeath started favourite for the June Hurdles, and looked a possibility when moving up near the far turn. He lost ground at the last couple of hurdles, and will have to be smarter Jat the jumps before winning again.

Valarth shaped well enough in the June Hurdles to suggest that with more experience he should be a winner. He now looks far more robust than when racing on the flat.

By her win at Dunedin, Silver Slipper has worked her way out of hack 'company. This Pink Coat filly has become very solid, and now looks more at home over a journey than over sprint courses as previously. She is trained at Orari by P. Stock, who was for some time attached to H. Nurse’s stable, and was later with C. Emerson.

Wild Irishman created a big impression by his good showing in the hurdle race at Wingatui. This was only his second appearance in public, and he gave a dashing display. He is only a three-year-old, a most uncommon age for a hurdler, and is the first of Gustavo’s progeny to be tried at the game. It is not intended to overdo him, and his future career will be followed with much interest.

The Crooner, who was'Royal Chief’s only opponent in the New Zealand St Leger Stakes this year, and who pulled up lame probably from the effects of a kick from his opponent while waiting at the barrier, is back in work again at Awapuni. This Nigger Minstrel colt bears the appearance of a good horse and he indicated in several of his races this term that he possesses stamina. It will occasion surprise if he does not win some good handicaps for Mr T. H. Lowry next season.’

Honours in the opening day’s double at the Auckland meeting on Monday were taken by Erination and Cheval de Volee, and the vote for consistency went to the runners-up, Huskie and Valmint. Erination was a well backed candidate in ■ the Great Northern Hurdles, but Cheval de Volee was one of the outsiders in the Cornwall Handicap. Huskie and Valmint' were sent out favourites, and they had to be content with the same

placing as they filled in the same events twelve months ago, when Huskie was beaten by a length by Sandy Dix and Valmint by a head by Boomerang.

Last Refrain showed at Washdyke a fortnight ago that he was returning to form, and he confirmed that opinion by winning the. Birthday Handicap well. He was never further back than third, and had the opposition silenced nearly a furlong from home. He finished third in- this race last season, carrying 111 b more than on Saturday.

After his recent performances and good track work, High Glee’s running in the Birthday Handicap was disappointing. He was never’ really well placed, and always outside at least one horse. When he moved. up into fourth place at the far turn his name was called as a likely winner, but he' was not able to hold his position. The heavy going upset him.

Another son of Limond has entered the list of winning sires, this being Fulmond who is standing in Adelaide.

Simond is the first of Fulmond’s progeny to win. He scored in a Novice race at Murray Bridge, South Australia, two weeks ago.

Fulmond, a typical Limond horse, is a son of Full Swing who was a halfsister, by Nassau, to Nightmarch. Fulmond was bought in the Trentham sale ring from Mr George Kain’s draft from Gladstone Park stud. Unfortunately his racing career was cut short by tendon trouble.

Lazybones, who is one of the best bargains made in bloodstock, is a three-year-old colt by Nigger Minstrel from Slackline, by Night Raid — Miss Hook, by Sarto —Montrose, by Royal Artillery from Lady Rosslyn, by Lord Rosslyn from Lady Gertrude, the dam of Euroclydon, who won the New Zealand Cup, Derby and Canterbury Cup. A long list of winners belong to the family; which is the most prolific tribe in the Stud Book. Lazybones is proving an excellent bargain for Mr R. J. C. Smith, who purchased the colt at tne Easter sales at 300 guineas. Since then Lazybones has scored three wins in three starts and looks by no means at the end of his tether.

H. R. Davies has recommissioned Sovereign Lady and Disdain, both of whom have put on a good deal of condition as the result of their spell since Easter. Davies also has Rebellion working along in brilliant fashion while the Myosotis filly from Berate is making steady progress and has shown her ability to gallop. Although a late foal she is well forward and her appearance alone suggests that she will be a galloper of no mean order. With regard to Rebellion it can. safely be stated that a more brilliant maiden could not be found about Riccarton, but there is always the uncertainty that he will be visited again by a lameness which earlier necessitated a spell for him. Rebellion is by Robespierre from Silver Scorn’s halfsister Muff, who was by Arrowsmith, so it will be seen that he is very closely related to the brilliant Disdain who is by Robespierre from Contempt, and so is a half-sister to Silver Scorn.

. Although never, yet actually extended,- Master Hotspur, the rising ■ two-year-old colt by Ringmaster from impetuous leaves the impression that he

will make a good galloper. In his two or three runs along on the two-year-old track at good three-quarter pace he has moved very attractively and looked as if he could have gone appreciably faster. He is trained by T. H. Gillett for Mr E. Hay of Pigeon Bay.

The three-year-old Aiwai, by Chief Ruler from Yeomanry, has been sold for export to Australia through the agency of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd. She has been held on lease by F. Davis from her breeder, Mr John Donald, Westmere, Wanganui, and won the Avondale Stakes and W.R.C. Roseneath Handicap at two years, and recently won the sprint event at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. Aiwai, who has been sold at a substantial price to Mr W. J. Smith, Sydney, is to join the St Aubins Stud at Scone, and will there be mated with Beau Pere, whom Mr Smith purchased at the Westmere dispersal sale. Aiwai should be a valuable brood mare, as she is bred on the same cross as the Two Thousand Guineas winner Mr Jinks.

The success of Corban in two hurdles at the Dunedin meeting apparently has served to introduce a very useful jumper to southern patrons of racing. Corban was the winner of three races on the flat prior to his first victory over the battens. He is a seven-year-old son of Balboa, from the English-bred mare Sabor, by Fowlingpiece, a son of Carbine. Sabor is also the dam of Crubenmore and Enwood.

Corban was well tested by another novice jumper in Wild Irishman, who is only a three-year-old, by Gustavo from Wild Erin. ’ Wild Irishman carries the colours of Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett, who won the Wingatui Steeplechase on the same day with Burwood. Wild Irishman and Burwood are verjj closely related.

Mendelssohn, winner of the Trial Plate at Napier Park on Monday, made up for his bad luck in the running on the first day and scored easily. This gelding is a three-year-old, by Hunting Song from Autumina, a half-sister to Aiguille and Le Chausseur. He is owned and trained by J. W. Nixon, Gisborne.

At one stage of the Trial Plate at Greenmeadows, Sunny Lass was so far in front that many regarded her as unbeatable. She was well clear entering the straight, where Mendelssohn and Royal Spades, the favourite, were already being hard-ridden. However, Mendelssohn caught her and won going away.

The" winner of the Ohau Handicap, the last event at Otaki on Monday, Flying Acre, was a maiden galloper with little racing experience. He is a three-year-old gelding by Acre from Pink Page, by Romeo from the renowned mare, Persis. Flying Acre is therefore closely related to Gay Seton and Gay Chief. He runs in the colours of Mr T. Jones and is trained at Levin.

It is astonishing to see the once Unsound Gladium still running into places at eight years old. He has been racing in different districts for six seasons, contesting 37 races, but he has won only five of them. After he had won at his only two starts as a three-year-old, his future looked secure, but he was produced only 10 times in the next three years. He and Liane are both the progeny of Degage.

GREAT NORTHERN TO VALPEEN.

SECOND SUCCESS IN EVENT.
