POTATO SUPPLIES

FEARS OF GLUT SCOUTED IN CANTERBURY.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 9.

A North Island suggestion that a glut would develop in the potato market is scouted by. Christchurch merchants, who say there is every possibility of South America coming to New Zealand for supplies later in the season. Inquiries have been received locally for supplies, arid advice has'been received that the South American crop is poor this season. Wet weather in April and a fine May resulted in’a "flood Of potatoes on the Christchurch market and the delivery of April and May North Island orders together. Consequently, northern markets were oversupplied for their immediate requirements. 'Merchants pointed out that in 1936 South America did not enter the New Zealand market till August and September and said they fully expect-: fed conditions to be similar this season.
