FRIESIAN BREEDERS

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING

HIGH OFFICIAL RECORDS. ADOPTION OF CLASSIFICATION RECOMMENDED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the New Zealand Friesian Association was held at Carterton yesterday. The president, Mr H. E. Johnson, of Hawera, presided. There was a representative attendance from Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu, jWairarapa, Canterbury, Otago and Southland. “In reporting to members on the year’s work,” Mr Johnson stated, “one very pleasing feature to be noted is the increasing number of very high official records being made by heifers and cows of the breed in the hands of young breeders. One in particular is Mr A. W. Montgomerie, whose junior 2-year-old heifer Ogkview Keyes Trojan raised the Junior 2-year-old class leadership from 740.51 b. fat to 836.981 b. fat and whose mature cow Manukau Zozo Sylvia produced 905.81 b. fat under C.O.R. conditions. Another record of special merit was that of Mr C. H. Potter’s cow Ohio Domino Sensation, 965.541 b. fat. Such breeders deserve to be congratulated upon their success. During the past season the entries of Friesians at A. and P. shows, just as in other breeds, has been affected by the general shortage of labour on farms and until the price of dairy produce is such that, after meeting costs there is enough left for the farmer to compete with the Public Works Department for suitable labour, this position must remain. Enquiries for stock of good type and butterfat backing are most pleasing and at satisfactory prices. This shows clearly that stronger constitutioned cattle of greater capacity are being sought after by dairymen and the Friesian is the logical choice for either butter or cheese making. The numbers changing hands is to some , extent reflected in the balance sheet under the item ‘transfers.’ ” SUCCESS OF BREED. Mr Johnson congratulated Mr M. S. Rennie on winning first, second and fourth prizes in the 1937 Friesian competition with the excellent production for his 2-year-old heifers of 6671 b. and 6741 b. fat C.O.R. Mr Johnson said that it was highly satisfactory to note that Friesians under C.O.R. were easily maintaining their outstanding lead over all other breeds for production of milk and butterfat. The average for all Friesians C.O.R. was now over 5001 b. fat, the first and only breed to have such a high average yield. Friesians under the Government Official Herd Test also headed all breeds for production of butterfat. Mr Johnson, on behalf of the Association, thanked the Director of the Dairy Division, Mr W. M. Singleton and his staff for their courtesy and help. Thanks were also expressed to his fellow councillors and to the secretary, Mr J. P. Kalaugher, and his assistant, Mr N R. Roper, for their services. The election of officers resulted as follow: President: Mr D. J. McGowan (Auckland); vice-presidents, Messrs Jas Hart (Morrinsville), O. A. Cadwallader (Greytown); auditor: Mr D. R. Revell (Auckland); council: Messrs R. H. Dickie (Tuturau), H. Jully (Waiuku), L. H. Leslie (Rangiora), R. A. Wilson (Bulls). The president presented the Derby Certificate to Mr M. S. Rennie for his win in the 1937 Derby and to the winners of gold medals for class leadership in production under C.O.R. in 1937.

The winners of gold medals were. Messrs M. S. Rennie, Piri Land Co, A. W. Montgomerie and R. A. Wilson.

CLASSIFICATION.

The report of the inspection committee regarding the classification of pedigree Friesian cows showed that the Wairarapa was visited on March 23 and 24. About 90 cows were presented for classification and of these 1,5 were very highly commended, 31 were highly commanded and 29 commended. The thanks of the committee were expressed to Mr O. A. Cadwallader for the excellent arrangements he had made. The committee considered that a classification scheme was both desirable and practicable. The matter of a classification scheme was fully discussed and on the motion of Messrs O. A. Cadwallader and M. J. Parker the council was recommend-* ed to introduce a classification scheme. It was also resolved to recommend the council to retain the present Derby Competition and to establish, if possible, at central shows, competitions for C.O.R. tested heifers, the awards to be made on type and production. On the motion of Mr O. A. Cadwallader a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr H. E. Johnson for his services as president for the past three years.
