BADMINTON
COMING VISIT OF AUSTRALIAN TEAM. SOME NOTABLE PLAYERS. Widespread interest is being taken in the visit to Masterton of the touring Australian Badminton team. The visitors will make their first appearance in New Zealand at Masterton on June 22 when they will meet a Wairarapa team in the Regent Theatre. Badminton has increased by leaps and bounds in the Dominion in recent years and this will be the first occasion on which an international team has visited the country. Particular interest will be taken in the match with Wairarapa as the visitors will be meeting the New Zealand triple champion, P. Hawksworth. An all sporting programme will be shown at the Regent on the same night. The following are personal notes of the Australian team: —
T. Thompson, of Launceston, Tasmania. Australian singles and mixed doubles winner in 1936. Only player in Australia to take a set from J. F. Devlin. Did not compete in Australian Championship, 1937. C. Craske, of Hobart, Tasmania. Australian singles winner 1935 and 1937 and mixed doubles winner in 1937 with Miss B. Cuthbertson. R. Harper, of Melbourne, Victoria. Australian doubles title with J. Prior, 1937. Runner-up with J. Prior, 1936. In final Australian singles and mixed doubles, 1937. Victorian singles winner] 1937. B. Tonkin, of Melbourne, Victoria. Victorian doubles winner with A. Mason, 1934, 1935 and 1937. Runner-up Australian doubles with J. Wade, 1937. Miss M. Horsbrugh, of Melbourne. Australian singles winner, 1935, 1936 and 1937. Victorian singles winner 7 times.

The following are the shorts to be screened during the first half of the programme:—“Gymnastics,” “Basketball Technique,” “P’s and Q’s” (Billiards), “Bobby Jones” (Golf).

“B” team to play Manawatu at Masterton on Saturday, June 18:—Ladies, Misses Bell, Cohen, Dixon, Mitchell, Rishworth, Ward. Men, Handyside, McCullough, Stubbings, Walker, Wenham, L. Wilson.
A practice for the B team will be held at the Drill Hall on Tuesday, June 14 at 5 p.m. All players must be present.
