Fish Shop Workers.
Fish shop assistants in the Wellington industrial district made application for an award in the Second Court of Arbitration, Wellington, yesterday. The workers asked for a weekly wage of £6 10s for the first shopman, or man in charge, and £6 for all other workers. The employers in their counter-claim suggested £5 for the first shopman, and £4 5s for all other workers. After hearing evidence, the court reserved its decision.
Self-Conquest First. We have no natural aptitude for war, writes the novelist, Mr James Hilton, in “This Week Magazine.” We have learned the lesson that all war destroys; that there can be no war to end wars, since all wars begin other wars. What shall we do to be saved? Mr Hilton asks —and answers it thus: While the tyrant conquers the earth, he who is eventually to dethrone him must first conquer himself. There can be no new quality in our civilisation till there are new qualities in our minds and hearts.”
