MINISTER OF LABOUR

PACKED MEETING AT WAIHI. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIHI, June 8. The Minister of Labour (the Hon H. T. Armstrong) addressed a packed meeting in the Miners’ Hall last evening. He dealt mainly with a defence of his Department and quoted unemployment figures in refutation of statements made on the subject by the Leader of the Opposition, at Hamilton. The Minister stated that production had increased during the past two years by £39,000,000 and that the workers had got fourteen millions more in wages since the Labour Government took office and these men were doing useful and for the most part reproductive work. The latest official returns obtainable, said Mr Armstrong, showed that since 1935 up to March 31, 1938, 25,000 more people were employed in factories, and in the last financial year, ended March 31, 1938, the increase in the numbers employed in shops and factories had been 4,643 and 12,510 respectively.

Throughout his two hours’ address, Mr Armstrong was accorded a sympathetic and-attentive hearing. A vote of thanks and confidence for his able address and for his services as Minister of Labour was carried unanimously.
