OIL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRESS IN NEW ZEALAND.
MINISTER SATISFIED WITH PROGRESS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. June 3.
Interviewed today, the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, expressed satisfaction with the developments taking place in prospecting for oil as a result of last session’s legislation. Satisfaction was also expressed by the Minister at the determination of petroleum companies to leave no stone unturned to exploit the oil possibilities in the Dominion.
When companies took out prospecting licences it was incumbent on them to carry out the work to the satisfaction of Government experts, Mr Webb said. The New Zealand Petroleum Company had, at a cost of £150,000, carried out a geological and physiological survey two years ago, but the plant at that time was incapable of reaching sufficient depth. The company now claimed that with modern drilling equipment it could bore to the necessary depth.
The legislation provided that no export of petrol would be permitted until the Dominion’s needs had been supplied.
