CHINA INDICTS JAPAN
DAILY BOMBING OF OPEN TOWNS ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION RECALLED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. GENEVA, June 6. The Secretary-General of the League of Nations has received and transmitted to Members States a communication from the Chinese Government to the effect that, since the beginning of Japanese military aggression in China. Japanese aircraft have bombed Chinese open towns daily, inflicting heavy loss on civilian life; and that recently Japanese aeroplanes continuously raided the populous city of Canton, deliberately bombing and machine-gunning residential quarters, far from any military objective, killing and wounding several thousand non-combatants, including many women and children. The Chinese Government points out that in September, 1937, the League Assembly adopted a resolution condemning aerial bombing of Chinese open towns by Japanese aircraft. , BRITISH INVITATION i ACCEPTED BY NORWAY 1 AND SWEDEN ; UNITED STATES EXPECTED TO FOLLOW SUIT LONDON, June 7. The Norwegian and Swedish Governments have accepted the British invitation to participate in an international commission to investigate the bombing of civilians in Spain. A favourable response is also expected from America. MOUNTING DEATH ROLL FIVE THOUSAND VICTIMS IN NINE DAYS. MANY PEOPLE STILL TRAPPED IN DEBRIS. CANTON, June 7. It is estimated that 5000 have been killed or injured in the air raids during the past nine days. Only four machines participated in today’s dawn raid. Bombs were scattered over the residential districts. Monday’s victims are still not fully counted. Many are still trapped in the debris, and their cries can be heard. The tired rescuers are still working. Whole squares of buildings have been wrecked. It is reported from Hankow that the Japanese raided Chengchow on Monday, 1000 people being killed or injured. YET ANOTHER RAID. ENORMOUS DAMAGE DONE. (Recd This Day, 10.25 'a.m.) CANTON, June 7. Japanese planes reappeared this afternoon and pounded with bombs the Government offices and the waterworks. Enormous damage was done. RAIDS TO CONTINUE WITH EVEN GREATER VIGOUR IN HOPE OF TERRORISING CHINESE (Recd This Day, 10.25 a.m.) SHANGHAI, June 7. A Japanese spokesman at Shanghai made the amazingly frank statement regarding the Japanese air raid policy that the Japanese planes intend to continue the Canton and Hankow raids with even greater vigour, in order to make the Chinese realise that it is futile to resist. ORDER TO EVACUATE CROWDS OF DEPARTING REFUGEES TRANSPORT UTTERLY INADEQUATE (Recd This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON. June 7. The- Hong Kong correspondent of “The Times” says the Government has ordered women and children to evacuate Canton, from which place 100.000 have already gone to Hong Kong, and many more to the interior. Crowds are assembled on the waterfront and railway stations, waiting for transport, which is utterly inadequate. LOSSES AT KAIFENG. CHINA CLOSING TOKIO EMBASSY. (Reed This Day, 10.5 a.m.) TOKIO, June 7. It is reported from the front that 5000 Chinese defending Kaifeng have been killed. The Chinese Government is closing the Chinese Embassy at Tokio and repatriating the staff of eleven, realising that Japan will not reverse her decision to sever relations.
