FEATHERSTON

PLUNKET SOCIETY REPORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual report of the Plunket Society states: —I have pleasure in presenting the 16th annual report for the year ended March 31st, 1938. The year has passed without any outstanding event having taken place, consequently the funds have suffered somewhat. The credit balance at ,the Bank of New Zealand was £2B 3s 4d at the commencement of the year, and £ll 2s 4d at the end, while the P. 0.5.8. balance was £lO6 14s 9d and £46 14s 9d at the close. The funds were increased to the extent of £4O during the year, £3O being a gift from Lord Nuffield fund to the society and £lO from McCarthy Trust. As a means of adding to the funds a Is Plunket appeal was launched but was still in progress at the close of the financial year. The idea of this appeal was that it would contact the mothers, who m some cases failed to support the society. It is regretted that the membership does not increase in accordance with the numbers on the books. If only mothers would realise their responsibility and join as members, it would help substantially to lessen the financial burden of the branch. The General Conference of Plunke't Societies was held in Wellington this year, this branch being represented by Mesdames Q. Donald and Algar Williams. Nurse Reid, owing to her approaching marriage, tendered her resignation in February last. Until the appointment of a permanent nurse, relieving Nurse Coppock” carried out the work in the district in a thoroughly capable manner. Miss Fitzgibbon, adviser to Plunket Nursing, recommended the appointment of Nurse V- B. Twentyman as permanent nurse for the district. It is with very deep regret that we have to record the death of Sir Truby King, the founder of the Plunket Society. His death removes one of the most distinguished personages from the Dominion. In conclusion I desire to sincerely thank Mr M. B. Tait for his great assistance, Mr J. G. McKenzie for auditing the books, Mrs E. Smith for her kindly interest in the Plunket Rooms, the committee for their co-operation, the Press for publishing reports and all others who have assisted the society in any way. —For the committee, Alice Donald, presi- : dent. CHILDREN’S CORNER DEDICATED. An exceptionally large congregation attended the service at St. John’s Church for the Dedication of the Children’s Corner on Sunday morning. Venerable Archdeacon Bullock (Wellington), Archdeacon for the Wairarapa, and the Rev. J. T. Holland, conducted the service. Mr S. Booth was the organist. During the service the ministers, church-wardens, and children’s choir processed to the Corner where Archdeacon Bullock performed the dedication ceremony. The furniture, consisting of chairs, table and pews, was beautifully made of manuka by Mr J. Mutter. The pictures, vases, candlesticks and mats all added to the beauty of the corner. The service was concluded with choral communion. PERSONAL ITEMS. Miss Jones (Wellington) and Miss K. Clapshaw (Dannevirke) are the visitors of Mrs A. P. A. Clapshaw. Miss J. Robbins (Auckland) is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Robbins, "Poi Poi,” for a few days. Miss Robbins is temporarily acting nurse-instructor at the Dental Clinic in Wellington. VITAL STATISTICS.
